About Hill Country Matero

Mate Culture, Texas Roots

Hill Country Matero is a veteran-owned small business based in the Texas Hill Country. We sell yerba mate, erva-mate, chimarrão, tereré, chá mate, and the accessories you need to prepare and enjoy them. We are rooted in Texas but ship to customers across the U.S. and around the world. Our goal is simple: help more people discover mate culture the right way — with honest products, clear guidance, and real respect for the traditions behind the drink.

Our Story

The founder, Rubén, first encountered yerba mate watching a character sip it on screen in the Amazon series Mozart in the Jungle. That small moment sparked a curiosity that turned into research, then tasting, then a deep appreciation for the mate traditions of Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Brazil, and the broader South American world.

Rubén is a Tejano entrepreneur and veteran rooted in the Texas Hill Country. He built Hill Country Matero from a genuine love of mate culture, South American food traditions, hands-on craftsmanship, and Texas hospitality. This business is not a trend play. It is a long-term effort to bring something real and meaningful to Texas — and to anyone, anywhere, who wants to explore mate culture seriously.

What We Do

We carry a range of mate products and accessories for every level of experience:

  • Yerba mate and erva-mate for traditional hot mate, chimarrão, and tereré
  • Brazilian chá mate, including toasted mate styles rooted in everyday Brazilian tea culture
  • Mate accessories including cuias, guampas, bombillas, filters, and drinkware
  • Event drinks such as cold chá mate, flavored mate drinks, frozen mate slushies, and hot mate service
  • Handmade woodworking goods including bombilla stands, wooden mate cups, cutting boards, and custom items made right here in the Texas Hill Country

We work with South American producers and suppliers to bring quality products to Texas and beyond. Whether you are brand new to mate or have been drinking it for years, we want to make sure you have what you need to enjoy it well — no matter where you are.

Why Mate?

Mate is not a wellness trend or an energy hack. It is a shared drink with deep cultural roots across Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Brazil, and surrounding regions. People drink it together, pass it around, and build community around it. It is practical, flavorful, and tied to real traditions that deserve to be understood and respected.

We are not here to sell you a miracle. We are here to introduce you to something that has been part of daily life across South America for generations — and to help you enjoy it in a way that makes sense for your life, whether you are in the Hill Country or halfway around the world.

Built in Texas, Shipping Worldwide

The Texas Hill Country is a place with its own strong sense of identity — hardworking, welcoming, and proud of its roots. That spirit fits naturally with mate culture, which is built around community, shared meals, and taking time to enjoy good company.

Hill Country Matero sits at the intersection of those worlds. We connect yerba mate and erva-mate with the broader culture of fire, food, and fellowship — Texas barbecue, churrasco, asado, carne asada, and the global traditions of cooking over live fire. If you are local to San Antonio, Boerne, or the broader Hill Country, you may find us at events serving cold chá mate, hot chimarrão, or tereré alongside good food and good conversation. If you are further away, we ship to you.

Barbecue Culture Around the World

One of the things that drew Rubén to mate culture was how naturally it connects to the global tradition of cooking with fire. From Texas brisket to Argentine asado, Brazilian churrasco to Korean barbecue, every culture has its own way of gathering people around heat, smoke, and a shared meal. Hill Country Matero explores those connections — not to flatten them into one thing, but to appreciate what they have in common: community, patience, craft, and pride in the process.

We will share content, recipes, and stories about barbecue traditions from around the world alongside our mate content. If you love fire and food as much as we do, you are in the right place.

Woodworking & Handmade Goods

Craftsmanship is part of the Hill Country Matero identity. Rubén builds functional, well-made wooden goods in his shop — items designed to complement the mate experience and the cooking life:

  • Bombilla stands — simple, solid, and practical for keeping your bombilla clean and ready
  • Wooden mate cups — handcrafted drinkware for the matero who wants something made by hand
  • Cutting boards — built for real kitchen and outdoor use, not just decoration
  • Custom items — if you have something specific in mind, reach out and let’s talk

These pieces are made in small batches and take time to do right. That is the point. Good tools, made carefully, last a long time. We ship handmade goods worldwide.

What's Next

We are a small business in growth mode. Our product selection will expand over time to include more yerba mate and erva-mate varieties, additional Brazilian chá mate options, more handmade woodworking pieces, and expanded event services. We are building this carefully and honestly, one product and one customer at a time — whether that customer is in Boerne, Buenos Aires, or anywhere in between.

We are also committed to education. Mate preparation has a learning curve, and we want to make that curve as approachable as possible. Expect clear preparation guides, honest product descriptions, and straightforward answers to your questions.
