About the Gir Breed

The Gir, originally from India, is the most productive dairy zebu breed in tropical climates. It arrived in Brazil around 1906, initially concentrated in the Triângulo Mineiro region — already renowned for zebu cattle breeding. By the 1920s, the breed gained prominence in São Paulo's coffee-growing regions, with an important nucleus in the city of Franca, known for genetic selection focused on high productivity.

Today, the Gir is a cornerstone of Brazil's dairy industry. Recognized for its remarkable adaptability to the Brazilian climate and pasture systems, the breed achieves impressive production levels — with lactations that can exceed 3,233 kg, or about 12 kg of milk per day. This combination of high productivity and hardiness makes the Gir a strategic choice for producers seeking efficiency and quality.
